Dental Hygiene
Neglected dental hygiene, untreated teeth and inflammatory gums usually increase the risk of the overall health, as oral and body health are often related. Regular dental care offers much more than a beautiful smile. Nevertheless, many people are not yet convinced to have a daily dental-care routine and visit their dentist only when a specific problem or symptom occurs.
Gum disease is an infection of the tissues that support the teeth. The infection of the gums is called Gingivitis, and is mainly caused by bacteria from plaque – a sticky coating that forms constantly around our teeth, and tartar. Untreated gingivitis can also affect the bone structure which supports our teeth, called Periodontitis, leading to the loss of our teeth. In certain cases, also gum disease has been related to increase the risk of heart attacks and strokes.
Bad Breath (Halitosis)
Consistent bad breath can be the result of neglected oral hygiene (gingivitis and periodontitis), or tooth decay.
4 Recommendations of Proper Dental Hygiene
1) Proper teeth brushing
Brushing is recommended after each meal, or at least twice a day for at least 2 minutes, with a toothpaste and a soft toothbrush. Hard toothbrushes can cause gum recession and tooth damage. Also remember to brush your tongue. Do change your toothbrush every 2-3 months.
2) Interdental brushes and teeth floss
The use of interdental brushes and flossing is recommended daily. It is the only way to remove food remnants and to avoid the accumulation of dental bacterial plaque and dental tartar between the teeth, where toothbrushes are hard to reach.
3) Use of oral mouthwashes
Oral mouthwashes are complimentary and should only be used occasionally after teeth brushing.
4) Well-ballanced dietary
The overconsumption of food and drinks containg sugars or acidic substances e.g. carbonated refreshments or wines, results in the development of bacterial plaque build up and teeth decay.
We recommend to visit your dentist,
at least twice a year (every six months),
for the necessary dental cleaning
and check up of your teeth.
